He made one mistake in the beginning. He pushed the chestnut too hard the first and second days, so that on the third day he was forced to give the gelding his head and go at a jarring trot most of the day. On the fourth and fifth days, however, he had the reward for his caution. The chestnut's ribs were beginning to show painfully, but he kept doggedly at his work with no sign of faltering. The sixth day brought Andrew Lanning in close view of the lower hills. And on the seventh day he put his fortune boldly to the touch and jogged into the first little town before him..

Though I almost never read westerns, over the past half year I’ve indulged in several old pulp westerns. Max Brand was a name I recognized from my early teens, when I still read a few westerns, so I decided to read The Way of the Lawless. It tells the story of a decent young man, Andrew, who through a couple of unlucky breaks, is forced into the life of a desperado. He falls in love with a woman at first sight, actually manages to speak to her, and since this is a pulp story, she reciprocates his feelings for her. The brother of the man Andrew killed is relentless in pursuit, which makes it difficult for him to settle somewhere peacefully to start a new life. The ending is odd, and comes as an amusing surprise. A fun story, though I don’t think Brand rates well against Louis L’amour or Zane Grey, and certainly not Bret Harte.Product details

Way Of The Lawless By Max Brand Illustrated edition by Max Brand Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I found that the book was very compelling and intriguing. It was also very hard to put down when I first started reading this great book. I feel this way because the book had a very quick start and was quick to action. I only had one real flaw that I found within the book and that was a very minor small spot that got rather boring and a little bit slow. But I decided for the sake of a great start to a book that i would finish the book and I am mow very happy that I did! I would recommend this book to anybody willingly!
Max Brand wrote variety into his books. Characters are different, have different points of view, different actions and ways of expressing themselves -- but all of them captivate the reader, and this book does the same. I love the guy and wish he had lived to be 100. Anything that has his name on it is well worth reading. pay attention and you will learn lots about the wild, wild West!
This was the first Max Brand book that I've read, and I enjoyed it. I've read a lot of Louis Labour westerns, and a few Zane Gray, and a few other western writers. I've enjoyed the Louis Labour western the most and I usually find, when I read other western authors, that I miss Louis Lamour's writing. I didn't miss Louis as I enjoyed this story. Max Brand is a capable writer who entertains, and educates. This was a good tale with believable characters, good dialogue, and plenty of action.
Max Brand has written another true winner. This boy was a great read. The fact that the storyteller leads us through the trials and tribulations of maturity development demonstrates that Right of Passage that all of us go through. It may not be as dramatic as what this storyteller writes, but all of us have an experience that we can look back on and say "this is the time frame that we went through in our transformation from youth to adult". In my role as a Youth Leader, I see this manifested constantly. In my role as an Adult Leader, I see this occurring regularly, and the Program I am a part of uses the Outdoors to create this opportunity. Much like the author, so like the Adult Volunteers, we are one in our Goal to create those opportunities.
I loved this book!! Couldn't put it down! I love these books set in history. I love to read the details of how people lived and survived. This author does an excellent job of transporting you right into the lives of the characters. I take my love of westerners from my dad. ) he always loved a good western. I depend greatly on reviews that are posted on . Even when I am left purchasing an item elsewhere, I read what the reviewers here have to say. I received no compensation for my review and state my honest and unbiased opinion of the product. My words and the rating I provide are mine and are based on my own personal experience with this book.
Ended in mid-air, nothing resolved. Hard to believe even that this copy is complete it ends so suddenly !? Don't know where the girl is. Don't know how - or if - she found out about the scheming of her fiance. Don't know when or where the outlaws will try to kill the hero. Don't know what happened to the hero's uncle. Don't know what happened to the loot from the last job. Don't know the story of the mysterious old man who knows more than he has told but promised to tell the rest 'someday'. Don't know how - or if - the hero can escape his outlaw title and live free again. Wish I had never started it.
This was my first Max Brand book, and I had no idea what to expect or even what the book was about when I picked it up. I'm so glad I did! Way of the Lawless is a Western which kept me up way past my bedtime - it's so riveting I had a hard time finding a good stopping place. The characters are well developed, even the minor ones. The story is well-written and moves along at a fast clip. The ending - well, I usually have a book completely figured out halfway through, but the ending caught me completely off guard. Adventure, (clean) romance, humor, personal reflection, this book has it all. I can't wait to read more of Max Brand's books.
